About the Coleman Center for the Arts

The Coleman Center for the Arts is a contemporary arts organization located in York, Alabama that uses art to foster positive social change, answer civic needs, build local pride, and use creativity for community problem solving. By nurturing and facilitating partnerships between artists and community we strive to create the vision and the means for a creative and sustainable society. Our mission is to build community by integrating contemporary art into education, civic life, and community development throughout our region.

The Summer Camp of 2011 was the first two-week, all-day summer program at the Coleman Center for the Arts. Sumter County youth ages 8-18 were invited to “Be a Character” as they experimented in visual arts, music, performing arts, animation, gardening, culinary arts and film. This program was made possible by support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Black Belt Community Foundation, the Alabama Arts License Tag Committee, MAPP International Productions, Americorps VISTA, the University of West Alabama, and the generous contributions of our individual supporters.
